WARWICK — For the family of the addict-in-recovery, it is more than words that are needed and it is more than the individual's sobriety, as well.

On Saturday, March 30, at 10 a.m., the Albert Wisner Public Library and Family Central will present a workshop, "Living Relationally in Recovery," with therapist Jerry Sander.

Relational living in recovery demands regular use of skills that were most likely poorly developed or never learned in the first place.

Without these, the individual's recovery runs the risk of replacing one form of self-absorption (the addictive behavior) with another form of self-absorption ("my recovery").

The affected family's response to the individual in recovery is often crazy-making, dysfunctional and disappointing, as well, as they, too, are in need of these skills.

Drawing on the work of Terry Real and Pia Mellody, this workshop will offer specific take-home skills; these will be practiced in role-play exercises that will be of practical value to all who attend.

This workshop is recommended for people in recovery who have at least six-months in, have a sponsor and are benefitting from an ongoing association with a supportive model.

It is also strongly recommended for family members (of all ages) of the person in recovery.

Sander, LCSW, is a therapist with more than three decades of experience working with individuals and families in New York City and Warwick.

He is specializing in relational life therapy work with couples as well as supportive individual psychotherapy in the city and Warwick.

He has four children of his own, and is well-acquainted with the challenges of family life.

To attend this event, register online at or call the Library’s Help Desk at 986-1047 ext. 3.
