Janet S. Howe of Pine Island entered into rest on Monday, Oct. 8, 2018. She was 75.

The daughter of Hal Smith and Mary Tanner Smith, she was born on Feb. 20, 1943, in Dallas, Texas.

Born into a circus family, her father “Herbert Castle” is in the Circus Hall of Fame as a wire walker and later owned his own circus that the family was part of.

When she was angry at her parents she ran away “from” the circus.

Active politically, she worked in the 1968 Eugene McCarthy Campaign as head of the Austin, Texas, office.

She served as the Orange County Coordinator of 2006 Congressional Campaign of John Hall.

She also served as the Warwick Democratic Party Chairperson for the last six years.

Janet worked as a sixth grade teacher in Austin, Texas, and was part of the Amity School in Warwick, which was a parent-run school.

She was a craftsperson for many years and then office manager for Chardavoyne Jewelry. She followed the teachings of G.I. Gurdjieff and was a member of the institute for Religious Development – The Chardavoyne Barn in Warwick.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Howe; son Peter Gibson; daughter, Megan Howe; granddaughter Sierra Gibson; and two grandsons, Alex and Zach Gibson; along with many nieces and nephews.

As per her wishes, cremation will be held privately.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the T.S. Purta Funeral Home.
