Richard “Richie” Conti of Tempe, Arizona, died in his home, surrounded by his family on Monday, Dec. 25, 2017. He was 70 years old.

Richie is survived by the love of his life and wife of 48 years, Mary Conti (Leonardi); daughters Bernadette Bensing and Andrea Moore of Phoenix, Arizona, and Teresa Mann and her husband Anthony of Warwick; his grandchildren: Anthony Mann, Taylor Mann, Elena Conti and Sara Moore; brother Bobby Conti; sister Peggy Cable and her husband John; sister-in-law Jackie Konikowski and her husband Al; many loving cousins, nieces and nephews and his beloved dog Harley.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew and Margaret Conti, and brothers Roddy and Tommy Conti.

Richie was born on December 19, 1947, in Teaneck, N.J. He grew up in Bergenfield, N.J., and married Mary Leonardi on March 9, 1969, in Old Tappan, N.J.

Richie attended the College of Santa Fe and received a masters degree from William Patterson University.

Richie was a professional educator and coach at Emerson Jr./Sr. High School in Emerson, N.J., for 32 years. He coached various sports teams throughout Bergen County, N.J., leading several teams to state championships.

Known to most as “Coach Conti,” he was a beloved mentor to countless students and athletes. Richie was known for his sense of humor, he made everyone laugh.

Formerly of Warwick, N.Y., Richie moved to Tempe, Arizona, in 2002. He taught and coached at Horizon Community Learning Center in Ahwatukee, Arizona.

Richie loved riding his Harley and watching 1950’s sci-fi and old war movies.

A celebration of life will take place in New York next summer. Memorials may be sent to the Arizona Humane Society (www.azhumane.org). Arrangements entrusted to Tempe Mortuary.
