GREENWOOD LAKE — As communities did across the country, many people who call Greenwood Lake home gathered at the firehouse on the early evening of Sept. 11.

They came to remember where they were that day 16 years ago when the world changed. Some came to remember a loved one they may have lost on Sept. 11, 2001, or a child or a friend who has died in the wars since then. Many came to remember the spirit of the firefighters, police and so many others who responded to the calls for help.

Greenwood Lake Village Justice Keith Garley recalled Linda Gronlund, an attorney and engineer for BMW who lived in Greenwood Lake and who on Sept. 11, 2001, was a passenger aboard Flight 93. When terrorists took over their plane, Linda called her sister to express her love, give her the combination to her safe and say good-bye. Then she and many other passengers then sought to retake the plane, only to have the terrorists crash the aircraft into the fields at Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

There also were words of comfort from Mayor Jesse Dwyer and Warwick Supervisor Michael Sweeton, the Rev. Robert Sweeney and Jim Tobin, president of the Greenwood Lake Fire Department. There also was a moment of silence.
