PINE ISLAND — The sun came out just in time for the Pine Island Chamber of Commerce's tenth annual onion eating contest last Sunday.

This year's winner is Robert Gillespie of Washingtonville, who ate an eight-ounce onion in one minute twenty nine seconds.

The contest was hosted by Jimmy Sturr at the PLAV in Pine Island and the onions this year were supplied by George Card.

The prizes include a plaque from the Orange County Farm Bureau, a check for $100 from the Orange County Vegetable Growers and a growler of beer from the Pine Island Brewing Company.
